This past weekend, this duck drove to Niederfinow into the deep mists of Brandenburg to see the spectacle called the Niederfinow Shiffhebewerk, a giant boat-lift linking the placid Havel and Oder rivers. I was awed by its immensity and felt something not unlike vertigo as the lift ascended several stories over my head, eventually revealing a cement floor where a river had just been. It is certainly a technological marvel, although rather simple at heart.
Imagine a normal old boat lock and a normal old elevator made love. This would be the fruit of that union–a frankenstein boat-lift.
Here is a video I made. Enjoy the music of Berlin’s own Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.
